A little over one hundred years ago, the Raven Wood began to twist in upon itself. The trees grew black and twisted, the brush grew dark and gnarled, even the animals became . . . different. The streams that run through the wood grew bitter and foul. The cause is still unknown, but what is known is that this Mutation is growing. The Mutation began at the heart of the Wood, directly in the center with an ancient oak that had long been revered by the elves and eladrin that inhabited the wood. The Mutation though steadily spread throughout the forest and soon began to affect the surrounding landscape in the rest of the Roan Valley.
Although none of the other communities in the Roan Valley have seen their land mutate in the same way as in the Raven Wood, their livestock and their crops have definitely been affected. The crops produce lower yields every year, and the livestock have grown thin and weak. Most in the valley fear that it is only a matter of time before they are unable to produce enough food to feed themselves and appeals have been sent to Lake Lumana for assistance in investigating the phenomenon.
When the party exited the caves under Ashenport they discovered that the Mutation had spread dramatically in their absence. Even the island of Ashenport was now affected by the Mutation and most of the Roan Valley is now twisted as well. Though travel is still possible through the valley, it has become increasingly difficult and food is now being brought in by the valley’s new aberrant masters.
