During the Dawn War, a powerful primordial named Haemnaethuun wreaked havoc upon the gods and their forces. Several gods attempted to destroy Haemnaethuun only to perish while barely harming the primordial. As things began to look bleak for the gods, six of them came together to fight the primordial. Before entering battle; however, Moradin, with the assistance of his allies, forged a powerful artifact he named the Dyrnnentine. The Dyrnnentine, when wielded in battle by gods proved to be almost as powerful as the gods themselves, yet the battle was still hard fought. In the end, Kord took up the Dyrnnentine and was able to defeat Haemnaethuun with the assistance of the other five gods (Moradin, Corellon, Erathis, Bahamut, and Pelor).
Although Haemnaethuun was defeated, he was not destroyed, for even the Dyrnnentine combined with the might of six gods could not destroy the primordial. It did; however, enable the gods to remove Haemnaethuun’s heart and imprison it behind six Seals. Legend states that after Haemnaethuun was defeated, the gods broke the Dyrnnentine into six shards and hid them from each other for they feared that the artifact could be used to destroy the Seals if it were to fall into the wrong hands. When Solara transported Elexara and two of her companions to the Dream Plane; however, Elexara learned the truth. When Kord brought the primordial down, the Dyrnnentine actually shattered into six pieces from the convergence of so much power. It is still believed however that following the battle the gods hid the shards of the artifact, a belief which has recently proved accurate as several shards have been recovered.
To date, three of the six shards have been recovered and as each new shard is recovered, the Dyrnnentine absorbs the new shard and transforms itself into a new, more powerful weapon to be wielded against the evil of the primordials. The Dyrnnentine is capable of sensing the presence of its remaining shards and will inform its wielder of the approximate direction in which the next closest shard lies. The artifact also passes along a sense of how close that shard is and becomes quite eager when a shard is nearby. Goals of the Dyrnnentine include: being reassembled into a whole piece once again, destroying any and all primordials (and their servants) that it encounters, spreading the power of the gods (particularly its creators), and to finally destroy Haemnaethuun once and for all.
